This initiative, generously sponsored by Mrs. Sivaneswary Kannuthurai from Canada, was launched to provide a safe and dignified home for Mrs. J. Rasammah, a daily wage laborer and mother of two daughters in Naranthanai, Kayts, Jaffna. Through the Community Development Project, renovation was possible and her deteriorating shelter was able to be restored, offering a stable, secure, and livable home for a vulnerable family that had long endured poverty, displacement, and uncertainty.
From Hardship to Hope: Addressing Shelter Insecurity
In the war-affected community of Naranthanai, many families continue to live in inadequate housing, often without basic facilities or protection from harsh weather.
Mrs. Rasammah, separated from her husband, carries the responsibility of caring for her daughter with special needs, her other daughter who was abandoned by her own husband and a young grandchild.
Her income as a daily laborer was insufficient to improve their unsafe and crumbling home. Without proper shelter, the family faced risks to their health, safety, and dignity.
This project was initiated to address these challenges ensuring that a woman-headed, low-income household could finally live in a home that fosters safety, stability, and pride.
Building Dignity: The Shelter Renovation Project
The Shelter Renovation Project was designed to uplift Mrs. Rasammah’s family by improving their housing conditions and restoring hope for a better future.
Key components of the project include:
- Structural Renovation: Repairing the roof, walls, and flooring to ensure safety and weather resistance.
- Sanitation Improvement: Installing essential sanitary facilities to promote health and hygiene.
- Community Involvement: Engaging local builders and volunteers in the construction process.
- Final Inspection & Handover: Ensuring quality completion and handing over the home with community participation.
By the project’s completion, Mrs. Rasammah and her family gained not just a renovated house but a foundation for rebuilding their lives with dignity and comfort.
Empowering a War Affected Family and Community

Through this project, Vanni Hope seeks to:
- Restore a sense of security and dignity for a struggling family.
- Improve living standards, hygiene, and health outcomes.
- Strengthen community solidarity by demonstrating the impact of collective support.
- Inspire others to contribute to rebuilding war-affected and impoverished communities in Northern Sri Lanka.
The project also highlights the importance of supporting women headed households, who often face compounded barriers to stability and opportunity.

- Safe, weather-resistant shelter provided for Mrs. Rasammah and her family.
- Improved hygiene and sanitation facilities ensuring healthier living.
- Strengthened community engagement through local involvement in renovation activities.
