Creating Safer Homes: Two Housing Renovation Projects Completed in Trincomalee

Two housing renovation projects were successfully completed for families in Serunuwera and Kinniya, Trincomalee District, providing safer, more secure, and comfortable living environments for two families facing economic hardship.

Funded by Vanni Hope and implemented in collaboration with Berendina, the projects addressed essential housing needs through improvements to the surrounding land, doors and windows, and roofing. The renovations helped create homes that better protected the families from weather conditions while providing improved environments for their children to grow and study.

Addressing Essential Housing Needs

Both beneficiary families consisted of four members and had experienced financial challenges that made it difficult to maintain and renovate their homes.

In Serunuwera, the household relied on the modest income earned by the father through labour work, while the mother cared for their two young children and managed the household. In Kinniya, the father supported his family through fishing, while the mother was responsible for childcare and household responsibilities.

Over time, limited household income had prevented both families from carrying out necessary repairs, leaving their homes in need of significant improvements.

Improving Safety and Living Conditions

The renovation work focused on essential improvements that strengthened the safety, security, and comfort of both homes.

The land surrounding the houses was cleared and levelled to improve drainage, reduce the risk of waterlogging during periods of rain, and provide safer access to the homes.

New doors and windows were also installed, improving security and privacy while allowing for better ventilation. New roofing provided greater protection from rain, sunlight, and strong winds and improved the overall condition of the homes.

Creating Better Environments for Children

Both households included two young children, making safe and stable living conditions particularly important.

The completed renovations provided improved spaces where the children could live, study, and develop in greater comfort and security. Beyond the physical improvements to the houses, the projects helped create healthier home environments that supported the wellbeing of the families and their children.

Restoring Comfort and Dignity

Following the completion of the renovation work, both families had safer and more functional homes that better met their everyday needs.

The improvements enhanced the structural condition, security, appearance, and overall comfort of the houses. For families who had previously been unable to undertake these repairs because of financial hardship, the completed renovations also contributed to greater dignity and confidence in their living environments.

Building Stronger Homes Through Collaboration

The two housing renovation projects reflected Vanni Hope’s continued commitment to supporting families facing economic hardship and improving living conditions within underserved communities.

The projects were funded by Vanni Hope and carried out in collaboration with Berendina, bringing together resources and local support to address the housing needs of families in Serunuwera and Kinniya.

Through practical improvements to their homes, the projects provided both families with safer and more dignified living environments and greater stability for their children.
