A new Nutrition Support Programme was officially launched at the Srivallipuram Evening Learning Centre in the Thirukovil Divisional Secretariat Division of Ampara District, expanding the support available to children attending evening classes in the community.
The learning centre had been established three months earlier to strengthen educational opportunities for local students. With the introduction of the nutrition programme, the centre extended its support beyond academic learning to address the health, nutrition, and overall wellbeing of the children it served.
Supporting Healthy Growth Alongside Education
Under the programme, students began receiving fresh natural cow’s milk and nutritious herbal leaf porridge each day. The nutritional support was introduced to promote students’ health while contributing to their physical and mental development.
By combining educational assistance with regular nutritious refreshments, the initiative recognised the important connection between children’s wellbeing and their ability to participate fully in learning.
Caring for Students Beyond the Classroom
Many students in the community walked nearly two kilometres to school each day, often travelling under intense heat. To provide additional support during their daily journeys, hats were distributed to help protect the children from the sun.
This practical assistance complemented the nutrition programme and reflected a broader approach to supporting the everyday needs of students while encouraging their continued participation in education
Strengthening Community Collaboration
The programme was officially launched by the Chairman of Vanni Hope, with the Deputy Director of Education of the Thirukovil Zonal Education Office and the Development Officer of the Thirukovil Divisional Secretariat also attending the event.
Their participation highlighted the collaboration between education authorities and community development partners in creating stronger support systems for children in underserved communities.
Investing in the Wellbeing of Young Learners
The introduction of the Nutrition Support Programme strengthened the role of the Srivallipuram Evening Learning Centre as a space where students could receive support for both their education and wellbeing. By addressing nutrition alongside learning, the initiative contributed to creating an environment where children could grow, learn, and develop with greater support.
This meaningful initiative was generously sponsored by the Calais Foundation, reflecting a continued commitment to improving educational opportunities and supporting the health and wellbeing of children in underserved communities.
