Building Toilets for Three Vulnerable Families in Thirukkovil

In the rural Thirukkovil Division of Ampara District, Vanni Hope has successfully completed the construction of toilets for three families facing extreme hardship. This initiative, sponsored by Easwary Jeganathan in memory of the late N S Jeganathan, marks a meaningful effort to restore dignity and improve sanitation for vulnerable households.

Poovitharani and her family had long struggled with the absence of adequate toilet facilities. Relying on neighbours or resorting to open defecation posed daily challenges, undermining their health, privacy, and dignity. With this new facility, the family now has access to a safe and hygienic toilet, ensuring improved wellbeing and a better standard of living.

Supporting Uthayatharshan’s Family

In Mandanai village, Uthayatharshan and his spouse, both with hearing and speech impairments, faced additional barriers in accessing basic sanitation. The lack of proper facilities exacerbated their vulnerability. The new toilet built by Vanni Hope has helped restore a sense of autonomy and comfort to their lives.

Securing Sanitation for Kaneshwary’s Family

Kaneshwary lives with her husband, who is paralysed, and their three children. Without a toilet of their own, they endured constant dependence on neighbours and faced the physical and emotional burden of poor hygiene conditions. With this project, they now have a private, safe space that enhances their health and safety.

Building Dignity through Sanitation

Each of these projects was implemented with community-specific designs using locally sourced materials to ensure cost-effectiveness and long-term durability. In addition to their immediate impact on health and hygiene, these toilet facilities are a step towards restoring dignity for each family.

We extend our sincere thanks to Easwary Jeganathan for her heartfelt sponsorship in memory of N S Jeganathan. This act of kindness has created lasting impact in the lives of these three families.
