In the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah and prolonged heavy rainfall, communities in Karainagar, Jaffna District, faced severe hardship as flooding damaged homes, personal belongings, and essential household items. Many families were displaced and left without basic necessities, including clothing, with children and young people among the most affected.
As part of our emergency response, Vanni Hope provided emergency clothing and essential item support to families in Karainagar Village Unit J/44, helping restore dignity and meet urgent needs during a critical post-disaster period.
Responding to Immediate Needs on the Ground
Flooding caused by Cyclone Ditwah left many households without access to clean clothing or personal items. Through conversations with families and community representatives, it became clear that clothing and basic personal belongings were among the most urgent unmet needs, particularly for children who had lost everything.
In response, Vanni Hope mobilised an Emergency Rescue Clothing Support Intervention to support families as they began recovering from the disaster.
What Was Provided
As part of this intervention, families received age- and gender-appropriate items, including:
- Clothing for children, women, and men
- Toys and bags for children & women
- Personal items to help restore daily routine and dignity
These items were distributed with care, ensuring families received what they needed most during this difficult period.
From Supporters to Communities
All clothing, toys, bags, and essential items were kindly donated by supporters in Australia. These donations were carefully sorted and packed by our volunteers before being shipped to Sri Lanka. Our local teams then coordinated distribution in Karainagar, ensuring assistance reached those most affected.
This end-to-end effort, from donation to delivery, reflects the strength of our community-driven approach and the generosity of supporters who stand with vulnerable families during times of crisis.
Who Was Supported
Through this intervention, 68 individuals received emergency clothing and essential item support. Beneficiaries were selected based on the severity of impact and urgency of need, with priority given to:
- Disaster-affected families
- Children and youth who lost personal belongings
- Individuals left without clothing due to flooding and cyclone damage
Families expressed deep gratitude for the timely support, noting how much of a difference it made during an already overwhelming time.
Standing With Communities Beyond the Emergency
This Emergency Rescue Clothing Support Intervention in Karainagar was an important step in addressing immediate needs following Cyclone Ditwah. While the provision of clothing and essential items helped restore comfort and dignity, recovery continues for many families still rebuilding their lives.
Vanni Hope remains committed to listening to communities, responding to their needs, and standing alongside them throughout the recovery journey.
