Building a Safer Future: Permanent Home Completed for a Family in Mannar

A permanent home and sanitary toilet were successfully constructed and handed over to a family of five in Emilnagar, Mannar District, transforming their living conditions and providing greater safety, security, and stability.

The project was implemented by Vanni Hope with the generous support of Engineers Charity Fund Australia. In addition to the construction of the home and sanitary facilities, a new electricity connection was provided, giving the family access to an essential household service.

Responding to an Urgent Housing Need

Before receiving support, the family had lived in a fragile thatched house that provided inadequate protection and posed significant safety concerns, particularly during storms and heavy rainfall.

The family had faced persistent economic hardship, with the father unable to continue his fishing and net-weaving activities due to ill health. With three children attending Grade 9, Grade 3, and preschool, the family’s difficult living conditions also presented challenges to the children’s wellbeing and education.

Their housing conditions had been further affected by storms and floods in late 2025, increasing the need for a safe and permanent place to live.

Creating a Safe and Permanent Home

The completed project provided the family with a permanent residential house designed to create a safer and more durable living environment.

The home included two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a toilet, providing dedicated spaces for the family’s everyday needs. The construction focused on structural safety, durability, and greater protection from environmental conditions.

With the completed home, the family gained a secure living space that offered greater stability and protection than their previous housing conditions.

Improving Sanitation and Essential Services

Access to adequate sanitation had been another significant challenge for the family. Before the project, the household did not have a toilet facility and had been required to rely on unsafe and unhygienic alternatives.

The construction of a sanitary toilet provided the family with improved hygiene, privacy, and safety. A new electricity connection was also provided as part of the completed project, improving access to essential services for their daily household needs.

Together, these improvements helped create a healthier and more functional home environment for the family and their children.

Supporting Children Through a Stable Home

For the family’s three children, the completion of a permanent home provided an improved environment in which to live, learn, and grow.

Previously, inadequate housing and economic hardship had placed additional pressure on the household and created concerns for the children’s education and wellbeing. The new home provided greater security and stability while creating a healthier environment to support their continued development.

Restoring Dignity and Security

The completion of the permanent house, sanitary toilet, and electricity connection significantly improved the family’s living conditions.

Beyond meeting immediate housing needs, the project provided greater dignity, security, and wellbeing while reducing some of the vulnerabilities associated with their previous living conditions.

The family expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the support that enabled them to move into a safe and permanent home.

Building Hope Through Housing

This meaningful project was generously supported by Engineers Charity Fund Australia and implemented by Vanni Hope, reflecting a shared commitment to improving living conditions for families experiencing significant hardship in Mannar.

By providing a permanent home, improved sanitation, and access to electricity, the initiative helped create a foundation for greater stability and a safer future for the family and their children.
