Vanni Hope recently hosted a series of important field visits across Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province, joined by young adults from The Aram Initiative, a dedicated group of second-generation Sri Lankans from the UK and Canada.
These visits gave our team and supporters the chance to see firsthand how Vanni Hope’s health, education, housing, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiatives are making a real difference in rural communities, and where there is still more to be done.
Strengthening Health Services and Community Wellbeing
The team first visited Base Hospital Thirukkovil to review our ongoing Health Services Strengthening Project, which has provided vital medical equipment to help hospital staff deliver better patient care. From improved monitoring devices to essential supplies, these upgrades are helping bridge the healthcare gap for families in this remote area.
In Aligamba-Thelungana, the team visited households supported through our Water Project, ensuring that families have access to clean, safe drinking water close to home. Access to reliable water is a critical component of Vanni Hope’s broader WASH work, which aims to improve daily well-being, reduce disease risk, and save time for women and children.
Visiting Schools, Housing and WASH Projects in Ampara
The field visit continued to Ampara District, where the team stopped at Thambiluvil Saraswathy Vidyalayam Maha Vidyalayam. Here, Vanni Hope has established a Smart Classroom to expand digital learning, built new toilets to provide safe sanitation for students, and supported housing and water improvements for the broader school community.
Seeing these facilities in action is a reminder of how small but meaningful upgrades, such as smartboards and clean toilets, can boost attendance, inspire learning, and improve daily life for rural students.
Listening First Hand in Mandur Village
The visit concluded in Mandur, where the Aram Initiative team and Vanni Hope representatives met with local families to hear directly about their day-to-day challenges and needs. By spending time with the community, we gain valuable insights that help shape future projects in ways that respect local priorities and bring lasting change.
The Power of Global Sri Lankan Youth
Vanni Hope extends heartfelt thanks to the young adults from The Aram Initiative for travelling from the UK and Canada to connect with families on the ground. Their energy and genuine care remind us how important it is for the next generation of Sri Lankans around the world to stay engaged and give back to the places their families once called home.
Together, we are building stronger bridges between rural communities and the global Sri Lankan community, working side by side to strengthen health, education, livelihoods and dignity for all.
