Empowering Women Through Revolving Loans and Sewing Machine Initiatives in Point Pedro

Vanni Hope recently facilitated a impactful visit by Mr. and Dr. (Mrs.) Babu Bahirathan Trustee members of Gandhi Illam, New Zealand, along with their family members, to Alwai West (Thikkam), Point Pedro, in Jaffna. This visit highlighted two impactful projects aimed at supporting rural development and women’s empowerment in the Northern Province.

Revolving Loan Project for Alwai West Women Rural Development Society

Launched in August 2024, the Revolving Loan Project was funded by Gandhi Illam, New Zealand, and implemented under the supervision of the Point Pedro Divisional Secretariat. The project is designed to support the Alwai West Women Rural Development Society, enabling women in the community to access financial resources and improve their livelihoods.

During their visit, the Bahirathan family met with several beneficiaries who shared positive feedback about the project’s impact on their lives and families. The initiative reflects the shared commitment of Vanni Hope and Gandhi Illam to fostering sustainable economic opportunities for women.

Donation of a Portable Sewing Machine

In a parallel effort to empower women, a portable sewing machine was provided to the Women’s Rural Development Centre operating under the Rural Development Department of the Northern Province. This sewing machine, funded by Vanni Hope, will be instrumental in equipping women with the tools they need to generate income and enhance their skills.

The event was again graced by Mr. Babu Bahirathan, and his family members, who emphasised their continued support for rural development and community-building initiatives.
