As part of our Women’s Empowerment Initiatives, under the Economic Empowerment focus area, Vanni Hope is proud to share the launch of a new Revolving Loan Fund for the Valvettithurai Rural Women’s Development Society in the Vadamarachchi North area (Point Pedro), Jaffna District.
This project empowers 40 women to build or expand small businesses, boost household income, and strengthen their families and communities.
How Revolving Loans Work
Access to fair credit is one of the most significant barriers rural women face when attempting to establish sustainable livelihoods. Traditional bank loans are often out of reach for families in fishing and agricultural areas like Valvettithurai.
A Revolving Loan Fund provides small, low-interest loans to trusted Society members. Each woman receives an initial loan — in this project, Rs. 30,000 — which she uses to invest in her microbusiness, whether it is poultry farming, vegetable cultivation, running a small shop, or making crafts to sell locally.
Once she starts earning an income, she repays the loan in affordable instalments with a small interest rate. These repayments are then loaned out again to new or existing members. This keeps the original fund circulating within the Women’s Rural Development Society, helping many women year after year without needing constant new donations.
This model not only provides fair and accessible credit but also strengthens the Society’s own financial base, enabling it to build an Emergency Welfare Fund, cover administrative costs, and continue to provide training and support for its members. Over time, this revolving loan approach supports self-reliance, community trust and lasting economic stability.
Beyond Loans: Training and Practical Support
This project extends beyond just providing microcredit. Women also receive practical training in small business management, record-keeping, marketing, and leadership. Essential tools, such as ledger books, calculators, loan recovery cards, and member forms, ensure the Society runs smoothly and transparently.
To help during emergencies, each member contributes 5 percent of her monthly income to a Welfare Fund that supports women facing unexpected hardships, adding an extra layer of security.
Strengthening Women and Communities
Rural women are the backbone of many households and local economies, yet they often face some of the greatest barriers to financial independence. Through this revolving loan initiative, Vanni Hope is helping women lift themselves and their families out of poverty, one small business at a time.
We sincerely thank Thamo & Pushpam Gangatharan from Australia for their generous support in making this practical, community-driven solution possible and for believing in the potential of rural women to lead lasting change.
