Revolving Loan and Business Training Support 30 Women in Madduvil Central, Sri Lanka

Vanni Hope is proud to announce the successful implementation of a women’s economic empowerment initiative in Madduvil Central, Chavakatcheri, Jaffna District. This project, delivered in partnership with the Madduvil Central Women’s Rural Development Society, was generously sponsored by the Sritharan Family from Australia. It supports 30 women in launching or expanding microenterprises through a sustainable Revolving Loan Fund and practical business training.

From Vision to Action: Creating Opportunities for Rural Women

In Madduvil Central, decades of civil conflict, displacement, and systemic underinvestment have left many families struggling to make ends meet. During community consultations, Vanni Hope identified that many economically active women had strong ambitions to start or expand micro-businesses but were held back by limited access to credit, entrepreneurial knowledge, and formal training.

To meet this need, Vanni Hope designed the Capacity Building and Empowerment Project, which provided a holistic package of support:

  • Microcredit loans of Rs. 30,000 to 30 women for launching or expanding small enterprises
  • Comprehensive training on financial literacy, bookkeeping, revenue management, marketing, and leadership skills
  • Essential office materials and stationery to strengthen the WRDS’s operations and improve financial management systems
  • Regular mentorship and monitoring, ensuring accountability and capturing success stories and lessons learned

The loan component was structured as a Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) with low interest (3–5%) and a ten-month repayment period, enabling funds to be recycled and reinvested in future women-led ventures. This model promotes long-term sustainability and self-reliance within the community.

A Foundation for Lasting Impact and Community Transformation

This project goes beyond financial assistance, it is a catalyst for social change and community resilience. By supporting women to become economically independent, the initiative helps break cycles of poverty and dependency in Madduvil Central.

The women supported by this project are already engaged in a variety of local enterprises such as poultry farming, tailoring, grocery retail, and small-scale agriculture. As they grow their businesses, the benefits extend to their families, neighbors, and the wider village economy.

Notable outcomes of the project include:

  • Increased household income and improved financial stability for 30 families
  • Promotion of a culture of saving and self-help, including the establishment of a 5% monthly emergency welfare fund
  • Greater participation of women in local markets and community decision-making
  • A stronger and more transparent Women’s Rural Development Society with systems in place to support future growth

With approximately 70% of the local population relying on fishing and agriculture both of which are vulnerable to environmental and economic shocks, this kind of income diversification is essential for long-term community resilience.

With Gratitude and a Vision for the Future

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Sritharan Family of Australia, whose generous contribution made this impactful initiative possible. Your support has planted seeds of opportunity in a community that continues to rebuild and recover from years of hardship.

We also recognize the unwavering dedication of the members of the Madduvil Central Women’s Rural Development Society, whose participation, trust, and commitment have been central to the success of this project. Your courage and determination are the driving forces behind real change.

As Vanni Hope continues its work across Sri Lanka, this project stands as a powerful reminder that empowering rural women is not just an act of support, it is an investment in the future. Together, we can build resilient, self-sustaining communities where women lead the way toward dignity, prosperity, and hope.
