Economic empowerment is a crucial step toward self-sufficiency, particularly for women in rural communities who face financial hardships. As part of our Women’s Empowerment initiatives, Vanni Hope has partnered with the Mariamman Women’s Society in Vellavely, Batticaloa District, to provide revolving loans that help women establish and expand micro-businesses.
This initiative, generously sponsored by Mahesan and Balini Chelvayohan, enables 35 economically disadvantaged women to gain access to financial resources, business training, and support, helping them build sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.
How the Revolving Loan Project Works
A revolving loan fund provides interest-free or low-interest micro-loans to women who lack access to traditional banking services. This allows them to start or scale up small businesses, such as farming, tailoring, food production, or other income-generating activities. Once the initial loan is repaid, the funds are reinvested into the program to benefit more women, ensuring long-term sustainability.
By supporting women-headed households, war widows, and economically disadvantaged women, this project is fostering financial independence and reducing poverty in the Vellavely DS division of Batticaloa District.
Why This Project Matters
Women in rural areas often struggle to secure the financial capital needed to start or grow their businesses. Many are involved in agriculture, fishing, or small-scale trade, but without access to loans, their income potential remains limited.
Through this Capacity Building and Empowerment Project, beneficiaries receive:
- Financial literacy and entrepreneurship training to help manage funds effectively
- Business management support to improve planning, bookkeeping, and marketing
- Access to micro-loans to develop sustainable businesses and generate income
This initiative is not just about financial aid; it is about equipping women with the skills and confidence to succeed as entrepreneurs.
The Impact on Women and Families
The 35 beneficiaries of this project represent some of the most vulnerable groups in society, including war widows, women with disabilities, and single mothers. These women now have an opportunity to improve their economic status, provide for their families, and contribute to the local economy.
Furthermore, as the loans are repaid, new recipients will be able to benefit, ensuring that more women in need can access financial support over time.
A Commitment to Women’s Economic Independence
Vanni Hope is committed to promoting long-term economic development in Sri Lanka. By investing in women, we are not only helping individuals but also strengthening communities. When women are financially empowered, they reinvest in their families, leading to better education, healthcare, and opportunities for future generations.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Mahesan and Balini Chelvayohan for their generous sponsorship and to the Mariamman Women’s Society for working with us to implement this life-changing project.
