Vanni Hope’s Pottery Production & Training Centre

Vanni Hope, together with the Nalliah Foundation (USA), has proudly sponsored a Pottery Production and Training Centre in Vellaveli, Batticaloa District, as part of our small-cottage industry projects. This initiative is aimed at empowering women-headed families in the region by providing them with vital training and equipment to start or expand their pottery production businesses. Through collaboration with the National Craft Council (NCC) and community partners like the Periyaporatheevu Craft Society, we are ensuring these women have the skills and resources they need for sustainable livelihoods.

The centre focuses on both production and training, offering workshops on traditional pottery techniques and modern methods. Women are equipped with essential tools, such as mini grinders, to enhance their productivity. This enables them to create high-quality pottery items that can be sold locally or distributed more widely, contributing to their financial independence.

In addition to the technical training, the project fosters a supportive community environment, where women can learn from one another and collaborate on larger projects. During a recent visit, Vanni Hope delegations from Australia and Canada assessed the progress of the initiative and the positive impact it has had on the participants’ lives.

By investing in traditional crafts like pottery, Vanni Hope is not only preserving cultural heritage but also helping these women achieve economic stability. This project is a key part of our ongoing commitment to women’s empowerment and community development in Sri Lanka.
