On 14 February 2025, a significant milestone was celebrated at Tellippalai Base Hospital, Jaffna, with the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony for the Palliative Care Unit, a joint initiative between Vanni Hope and Paalam Bridge to Humanity. This essential project aims to provide comprehensive palliative care services to patients with chronic and life-limiting conditions in the Northern Province, ensuring compassionate care and improved quality of life.
The event was attended by Dr. Ganesalingam Pranavan, the Director of Paalam Bridge to Humanity, who highlighted the importance of developing palliative care services in the region. His address underscored the commitment of Paalam to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and the collaborative effort between Paalam and Vanni Hope to bring this project to life.
The ceremony was graced by Mr. N. Vethanayahan, Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, as the Chief Guest, along with distinguished healthcare leaders, community partners, and representatives from Vanni Hope and Paalam Australia.
Addressing a Crucial Healthcare Gap
Tellippalai Base Hospital plays a pivotal role in providing healthcare services to communities in the Northern Province. However, the absence of a dedicated palliative care unit has long been a challenge for patients needing specialised support. This new unit will fill that gap, focusing on comfort, care, and holistic treatment for patients and their families.
The Palliative Care Unit will be the first of its kind at Tellippalai Base Hospital, offering a comprehensive approach to palliative care, including medical, emotional, and psychological support.
A Collaborative Effort for a Better Future
The partnership between Vanni Hope and Paalam exemplifies the strength of collaboration in addressing healthcare challenges. This initiative is a testament to both organisations’ dedication to building sustainable healthcare solutions for underserved communities in Sri Lanka.
During his address, Dr. Pranavan highlighted the crucial role of partnerships in improving access to quality healthcare services and thanked all those involved in making the project possible.
Looking Ahead
While the foundation stone marks the beginning of construction, the completion of this Palliative Care Unit will offer patients a safe, compassionate space for treatment and support. It will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals and their families.
Vanni Hope is honoured to collaborate with Paalam in bringing this transformative project to life and remains committed to supporting healthcare development initiatives across Sri Lanka.
Gratitude and Appreciation
We extend our sincere thanks to Paalam for their partnership and support, the healthcare leaders, and all community partners who have contributed to this project. Together, we are building more than just a facility—we are building hope and care for the future.
