Community Health Program – Free Elders Health Screening in Thanthamalai, Batticaloa

As part of our Health Enhancement Projects, Vanni Hope successfully conducted a Free Elders Health Screening and Awareness Campaign in Thanthamalai, Paddipalai DS Division, Batticaloa District. This initiative aimed to promote preventive healthcare and ensure that elderly individuals in rural communities receive the medical attention they need.

This program was sponsored and led by Dr. Krishna Mandaleson, our Health Enhancement Projects Advisor, whose dedication to community healthcare continues to make a significant impact.

Addressing Healthcare Gaps in Rural Communities

Access to regular health screenings is a significant challenge for elderly individuals in remote areas of the Eastern Province. Many face difficulties in travelling long distances to hospitals, resulting in undiagnosed and untreated chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.

The Elders Health Screening Program bridges this gap by bringing essential health services directly to these communities. This initiative not only provides immediate medical assessments but also raises awareness about preventive care, encouraging individuals to monitor their health regularly.

Key Health Screenings Provided

During the screening, elderly individuals were assessed for various health parameters, including:

  • Blood pressure monitoring to detect hypertension risks
  • Blood glucose level checks to screen for diabetes
  • Height, weight, and BMI measurements to assess overall health status
  • Eyesight Testing to determine vision levels.
  • General health consultations to identify potential concerns and provide medical advice

With the guidance of Dr. Krishna Mandaleson, this initiative ensured that seniors received personalised care and health education, empowering them to take proactive steps towards a healthier future.

The Importance of Preventive Healthcare

Early detection of non-communicable diseases is crucial in improving health outcomes, particularly among the elderly. Through this program, many individuals gained critical insights into their health status, allowing them to seek timely medical intervention.

This screening initiative reflects Vanni Hope’s commitment to community healthcare, ensuring that no one is left behind when it comes to accessible and quality medical services.

Looking Ahead

Vanni Hope remains dedicated to expanding health screening programs across Sri Lanka, particularly in underserved rural areas. By continuing to collaborate with medical professionals and healthcare advisors, we aim to strengthen preventive healthcare services and improve the quality of life for elderly individuals in vulnerable communities.
