Expanding Health and Livelihood Support Across Trincomalee and Batticaloa

As part of our mission to create community-led, sustainable change, Vanni Hope continues to engage directly with rural communities across Sri Lanka. On a recent visit, our Chairman, Ranjan Sivagnanasundaram and Health Projects Advisor, Dr. Nage Nagendran, led our field team in conducting a series of strategic field visits in the Trincomalee and Batticaloa Districts. These visits aimed to assess current needs and identify opportunities for expanding our Health Enhancement and Sustainable Livelihoods Initiatives.

Divisional Hospital Serunuwara Visit

Our team began the day at Serunuwara Hospital, where we met with staff to understand the hospital’s urgent needs in terms of medical infrastructure, equipment, and patient services. This rural hospital plays a critical role in the region, yet struggles with limited resources. Vanni Hope is now evaluating potential ways we can support with essential medical equipment, facility upgrades, and patient care initiatives.

Divisional Hospital Sampoor Visit

At Sampoor Hospital, the team reviewed existing healthcare services and explored how Vanni Hope might assist in bridging service gaps for underserved populations in the area. This included conversations about potential future partnerships and how our international donor network can directly contribute to enhancing service delivery.

Valaichchenai Base Hospital Visit

The visit to Valachchani Base Hospital focused on infrastructure challenges, including insufficient equipment and patient support tools. Discussions with hospital administrators highlighted the need for immediate support in critical care equipment and long-term infrastructure planning. Vanni Hope is committed to working with local stakeholders to strengthen the hospital’s ability to serve its growing patient base.

Elakkanthai Tank – Inland Fishing Initiative

Beyond hospitals, the team visited the Elakkanthai Tank, one of the sites under our inland fishing project implemented in partnership with NAQDA (National Aquaculture Development Authority). This initiative is helping local families—especially women and those in female-headed households—build sustainable livelihoods through freshwater aquaculture. The team was pleased to see firsthand the impact of this initiative and spoke with beneficiaries who shared stories of improved income and wellbeing.

Looking Ahead

These field visits are part of Vanni Hope’s broader commitment to informed, community-led development. By directly engaging with the hospitals and communities we aim to support, we ensure that our interventions are not only impactful but also rooted in local realities. Our gratitude goes to the hospital staff, NAQDA officers, and community members who welcomed us and shared their insights. These experiences continue to guide our priorities and partnerships moving forward.
