Emergency food relief distribution by Vanni Hope Sri Lanka to flood-affected families in Vantharumoolai Village, Batticaloa District after Cyclone Ditwah

Emergency Response Food Relief for 60 Families in Vantharumoolai, Batticaloa District

Severe rainfall brought by Cyclone Ditwah caused widespread flooding across parts of the Batticaloa District, with Vantharumoolai Village in the Senkalady Divisional Secretariat among the affected communities. Rising floodwaters damaged homes and destroyed stored food supplies, forcing many families to remain indoors or seek temporary shelter for safety.

To respond to the immediate needs of the community, Vanni Hope carried out an emergency food relief intervention to support affected households during this critical period.

Supporting 60 Flood-Affected Families

A total of 60 families, comprising 208 individuals, were impacted by the flooding in Vantharumoolai. Displacement and restricted movement made it difficult for families to access food, clean water and essential goods.

Families sought temporary shelter in community spaces, schools and nearby safe houses as floodwaters made normal daily activities unsafe.

Emergency Food Relief Intervention

To address urgent food insecurity, Vanni Hope distributed dry-ration packs and emergency food items to all 60 affected families. This support helped ensure short-term food security while families navigated the early stages of displacement and uncertainty.

The timely distribution helped stabilise households during a period when access to shops, markets and transport routes was severely limited.

Observations and Ongoing Challenges

Despite the successful delivery of emergency food relief, several challenges remain in the community:

  • Continuous rainfall continues to limit movement and access
  • Flooded internal roads caused delays during distribution
  • Families have expressed the need for additional support, including hygiene items, bedding and clothing

These challenges highlight the need for continued monitoring and further assistance as recovery efforts progress.

Continuing Support for Recovery

The emergency food relief intervention provided vital support to 208 individuals affected by severe flooding in Vantharumoolai. While immediate food needs have been addressed, sustained assistance will be essential to support full community recovery in the weeks ahead.

Vanni Hope remains committed to standing with affected families as part of our broader Cyclone Ditwah emergency response across Sri Lanka.
