Emergency Response Household Support for 25 Families in Gampola and Udunuwara After Cyclone Ditwah
Following the severe impacts of Cyclone Ditwah, families across parts of the Kandy District have been affected by heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides, leading to widespread disruption of daily life. Communities within the Udapalatha Divisional Secretariat (Gampola area) and the Udunuwara Divisional Secretariat, specifically the Kalugamuwa Grama Niladhari Division, were among those facing significant hardship.
As part of our continued emergency response, Vanni Hope with the support of Gandhi Illam NZ provided essential household support to 25 affected families, addressing urgent needs that extended beyond food relief.
Background
Flooding and landslides caused by continuous heavy rainfall damaged homes and displaced families, leaving many without the basic household equipment required for safe and dignified living. In addition to food insecurity, families lacked items needed for cooking, boiling water, resting safely and managing everyday household activities.
Without these essentials, daily life became extremely challenging during an already stressful and uncertain period.
Situation Overview
Families in the affected areas faced several difficulties, including:
- Lack of essential household equipment
- Limited ability to prepare food safely
- No proper bedding for rest and recovery
- Ongoing disruption caused by flooding and landslides
These challenges highlighted the need for targeted household-level support to restore basic functionality and comfort.
Household Support Intervention
Instead of dry-ration packs, essential household items and mattresses were distributed to 25 families, ensuring households had both the tools to manage daily living and safe bedding during displacement and recovery.
Items provided included:
- Gas cookers
- Kettles
- Rice cookers
- Knives
- Jugs and cups
- Other basic household utensils
- Mattresses for safe and comfortable sleeping
This intervention was carried out with the support of Gandhi Illam NZ and implemented by Vanni Hope.
Families expressed deep appreciation for the support, noting that the household equipment and mattresses greatly improved their ability to prepare meals, rest properly and manage daily routines during a difficult time.
Beginning of Phase 2 of Our Emergency Response
This household support initiative marks the beginning of Phase 2 of Vanni Hope’s Cyclone Ditwah emergency response.
