anni Hope providing household items to 15 families in Lawson Street, Nuwara Eliya after flooding and landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah

Household Support for 15 Families Affected by Landslides in Nuwara Eliya

As extreme weather linked to Cyclone Ditwah continued to impact communities across Sri Lanka, even urban areas were not spared. In Lawson Street, located in the heart of Nuwara Eliya, heavy rainfall and landslides caused flooding that damaged homes and disrupted daily life for local families.

As part of Phase 2 of our Cyclone Ditwah emergency response, Vanni Hope carried out a field visit to better understand the needs of affected households and provide targeted support beyond immediate food relief.

Situation on the Ground

A total of 15 families, representing 68 individuals, were affected in the Lawson Street urban area. Among them were households of teachers from CP. N. Good Rest Convent School, a school where we have supported education previously, whose homes sustained damage due to flooding.

Families reported ongoing transportation difficulties, damage to frequently used household facilities, and safety-related concerns following the landslide and flood impact. With limited resources and disrupted living conditions, many struggled to carry out basic daily activities.

Household Support Intervention

In response, Vanni Hope provided essential household items to 15 affected families, focusing on restoring dignity, safety and basic functionality within their homes.

The items distributed included:

  • Gas cookers
  • Rice cookers
  • Mattresses
  • Kettles

This assistance helped families resume cooking safely, improve sleeping conditions, and regain a sense of stability during a period of uncertainty.

Why This Support Matters

While emergency food relief is critical during the immediate aftermath of disasters, Phase 2 of our response focuses on early recovery. Providing household items ensures families can begin rebuilding their daily routines and reduces the long-term strain caused by disaster-related losses.

This approach reflects how Vanni Hope works across Sri Lanka: listening to communities, identifying real needs, and responding in practical and meaningful ways.

Standing With Communities

This intervention in Lawson Street forms part of our broader commitment to support families affected by Cyclone Ditwah, whether in rural villages or urban neighbourhoods. We continue to work closely with community members and local stakeholders to ensure assistance reaches those who need it most.
