Severe flooding, landslides, and continuous heavy rainfall following Cyclone Ditwah caused widespread devastation across parts of the Badulla District. In Hindagoda, under the Badulla Divisional Secretariat, families were heavily impacted when water and thick mud flowing from the nearby Badulu Oya surged through the area, inundating homes and destroying essential belongings. In this community area, floodwaters and mud levels rose to over six feet, leaving families with little time to save their possessions.
As part of our response, our teams spent time speaking directly with affected families and community members to understand what they needed most. Many shared that beyond food, they had lost basic household items that were essential for daily life, dignity, and caring for their children.
Parents spoke about not having clean clothes or bed sheets, and some shared that they had no way to iron their children’s school uniforms, making it difficult for children to return to school with confidence after the disaster. These conversations helped shape the support we provided.
Understanding the Needs on the Ground
Through community consultations and field assessments, several key challenges were identified:
- Loss of clothing and kitchen utensils due to flooding, landslides, and mudflow from Badulu Oya
- Lack of basic household items needed for hygiene, comfort, and school readiness
- Increased vulnerability among families who were most severely affected
These conditions placed significant strain on households already coping with displacement and trauma.
Emergency Support Delivered
In response, Vanni Hope implemented an emergency household items and clothing support intervention as part of Phase 2 of our Cyclone Ditwah emergency response, guided directly by what families told us they needed.
Through this intervention, 80 families, representing 350 individuals, received essential support to help restore dignity and stability. Assistance provided included:
- Kitchen utensils such as crockery, cutlery, and plates
- Clothing for severely affected families
- Irons so parents could prepare their children’s school uniforms
- Quality bed sheets to support basic comfort and hygiene
This targeted support helped families resume everyday routines and supported children in returning to school with dignity.
Community Impact and Gratitude
Families expressed deep gratitude for the assistance, sharing that the items provided addressed needs that were often overlooked during emergency relief. The support brought comfort, dignity, and a sense of normalcy during a very difficult period.
This intervention was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Erlalai People’s Association – Canada, whose support directly contributed to improving the well-being of families affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

Continuing Our Cyclone Ditwah Response
This project forms part of Phase 2 of Vanni Hope’s Cyclone Ditwah response, which focuses on helping families stabilise daily life after the initial emergency phase. As recovery continues, our teams remain on the ground listening to communities, identifying further needs, and planning longer-term support across Sri Lanka.
We are grateful to our partners, supporters, and volunteers who make it possible for us to respond not just with aid, but with care, dignity, and compassion.
