In the rural classrooms of Verugal, Trincomalee, students once learned about digital tools like apps and interfaces not by using them, but by hearing about them in theory or seeing their names sketched on a chalkboard. Access to real technology felt far out of reach.
That reality has now changed.
As part of our Education Support Initiative, Vanni Hope, in partnership with World Vision Lanka, has successfully established smart classrooms at three schools in the Verugal region:
- Verugalampathy Hindu Maha Vidyalayam
- Thuvaraha Vidyalayam
- ETM Hindu College
Together, these schools serve 1,291 students, the majority of whom come from under-resourced rural communities. This project brings transformative, hands-on access to technology, equipping students not only with tools but with opportunities to explore, innovate, and connect with the wider world.
From Chalkboards to Touchscreens
Each smart classroom is equipped with interactive screens, computers, and digital learning tools that enhance learning through a more visual, dynamic, and inclusive approach. For teachers, the new technology offers exciting opportunities to teach concepts more effectively. For students, it brings subjects to life, encouraging participation, problem-solving, and creativity.
What was once just theory is now a tactile, visual, and interactive experience.
A Partnership Creating Possibility
This project was made possible through our collaboration with World Vision Lanka, whose partnership and co-investment have helped ensure that entire school communities benefit, not just through new equipment, but also through training and support that make the digital shift meaningful and lasting.
We are also profoundly grateful to Dr. Sabaratnam Somasundaram and Prof. Sabaratnam Prathaban, whose generous sponsorship made this transformation possible. Their support has directly contributed to shaping a future of digital inclusion and equal opportunity for these rural students.
Opening Doors to the Future
These new smart classrooms are already inspiring students and teachers alike. In a region where educational infrastructure has long lagged behind, this project is a beacon of what’s possible when organisations and individuals come together with a shared vision.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our partners, sponsors, and all who made this initiative a reality.
