Empowering Rural Students with Computers at CP/NA/Namagal Tamil Maha Vidyalayam in Naula

Access to digital learning tools is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity for quality education. Recognising this need, Vanni Hope has successfully implemented a school computer project at CP/NA/Namagal Tamil Maha Vidyalayam in Naula, Matale District, providing essential technology support for students in one of Sri Lanka’s most under-resourced rural communities.

Bridging the Digital Divide in the Central Province

CP/NA/Namagal Tamil Maha Vidyalayam is located in the Naula Education Zone of Matale District, an area predominantly home to Tamil-speaking families with many engaged in plantation work or daily wage jobs. Most families in the region are economically vulnerable, struggling to meet basic needs and provide their children with a consistent education.

Recognising the stark digital gap in the region, this project was launched to equip the school with a computer classroom that would give its 230 students access to critical digital learning tools. The aim: to improve students’ technical knowledge, promote smart learning, and prepare them for the modern world.

Why It Matters

Computers in schools are more than just machines—they are a gateway to opportunity. With access to digital tools, students can:

  • Develop essential computer literacy
  • Explore interactive and inclusive smart learning experiences
  • Improve academic performance and critical thinking
  • Gain the skills necessary for future employment

This initiative supports UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

A Comprehensive Approach

The project included:

  • Installing new computers in a dedicated classroom space
  • Providing technical guidance through the Department of Education
  • Organising a handing-over ceremony to mark the project’s completion
  • Engaging the school and local education authorities in long-term maintenance

The success of the initiative was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship from Lakshmanan Iyer Sasitharan & Family (Australia). Their support has empowered an entire community of students with access to vital technology.

Looking Ahead

Vanni Hope remains committed to supporting educational infrastructure in underserved areas. By equipping schools like CP/NA/Namagal Tamil Maha Vidyalayam with modern tools, we are not only improving academic performance but also helping to build a tech-literate generation ready to contribute to Sri Lanka’s future.
