As part of our ongoing Education Support Initiatives, Vanni Hope is proud to have completed the establishment of a Model Mathematics Classroom at MT. Ratwatta Tamil Vidyalayam in Ukuwela, Matale District. This project was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Lakshmanan Iyer Sasitharan family from Australia.
Addressing the Needs of a Marginalised Community
MT. Ratwatta Tamil Vidyalayam serves children from the plantation communities in the Central Province, many of whom come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. With limited access to educational resources, especially in mathematics, the school faced significant challenges including:
- Poor student performance in mathematics
- Lack of structured mathematical curriculum tools
- Shortage of trained mathematics educators
- Minimal government and NGO support for estate schools
Our project aimed to address these issues by equipping the school with essential mathematical teaching tools that foster active learning and conceptual understanding.
Project Implementation and Impact
The classroom was equipped with high-quality learning tools such as abacuses, geometry kits, visual number charts, and other mathematical aids. This environment is specifically designed to nurture interest and improve comprehension in mathematics among young learners.
The implementation followed a structured process including:
- Stakeholder consultations
- Procurement and installation of equipment
- Formal handover event
- Ongoing monitoring and feedback collection
With over 90 direct beneficiaries and more than 150 indirect beneficiaries, this initiative is already making a difference. Students now have access to engaging, practical learning tools, and teachers are empowered to deliver more effective lessons.
Looking to the Future
The creation of a model mathematics classroom is just the beginning. This project sets the foundation for building a tech-savvy, academically strong generation from underprivileged areas. By supporting schools like MT. Ratwatta Tamil Vidyalayam, we are not just improving education—we are investing in future engineers, scientists, and educators.
