House Renovation Project Brings Safety and Hope to a Family in Neervely

A safe home provides more than shelter. It provides security, dignity and hope for the future.

Through Vanni Hope’s Shelter For Life Project under our Community Development Pillar, a vulnerable family in Neervely, Jaffna District, has received life changing home improvements thanks to the generous support of The Saiva Manram (Sydney Murugan Temple). The completed renovations have transformed the family’s living conditions, creating a safer, healthier and more comfortable home for two hardworking parents and their three young children.

Family home renovated through Vanni Hope Shelter For Life Project in NeervelyA Family Working Hard to Build a Better Future

Mrs D. Shanthimathi lives in Neervely with her husband and their three children. Mrs Shanthimathi works at Vanni Hope, while her husband earns a living as a daily wage labourer. Although both parents work hard, their income is irregular and often insufficient to meet the family’s everyday needs. As a result, maintaining and improving their home had become increasingly difficult.

The family is determined to provide a brighter future for their children, who are aged 11, 9 and 7 and all attend school. Recognising their circumstances, Vanni Hope identified the family for support through the Shelter For Life Project to complete essential home improvements that would improve safety, comfort and overall quality of life.

A Home Transformed Through Essential Renovations

Thanks to this generous support, all planned home improvement works were successfully completed. The project included important door and window improvements that strengthened the security of the home while making it more practical for everyday living. A new toilet door was installed to improve privacy, dignity and hygiene for every member of the household, while child safety improvements reduced potential hazards and created a safer environment for the family’s three children.

The interior and exterior of the home were also painted using quality materials, significantly improving the appearance of the house while creating a cleaner, healthier and more welcoming place to live. The painting also helps protect the building and improve its durability for years to come. In addition, essential site preparation and supporting works were completed to ensure every planned improvement could be successfully delivered, further enhancing the overall condition and functionality of the property.

Creating a Lasting Impact

The completed renovations have made a meaningful and lasting difference to the family’s quality of life. Today, they have a cleaner, safer and more comfortable home that provides greater security, supports better health and wellbeing, and restores dignity and pride. Most importantly, the family’s three children now have a safe environment where they can learn, grow and enjoy a brighter future.

This project was made possible through the generous support of The Saiva Manram (Sydney Murugan Temple). Their kindness has created lasting change for one family in Neervely and demonstrates how community support can transform lives. At Vanni Hope, we believe every family deserves the opportunity to live in a safe and dignified home. Through our Shelter For Life Project, we continue working alongside generous supporters to strengthen families, improve communities and create lasting hope across Sri Lanka.
