Restoring Dignity Through Safe Sanitation for a Family in Umari

In the village of Umari in the Thirukkovil Division of Ampara District, a safe and hygienic toilet facility was successfully constructed and handed over to support the family of U. Uthayanithi. This important initiative aimed to improve the living conditions, health, privacy, and dignity of a vulnerable five member household facing significant economic hardship.

The family had been living without access to a private sanitation facility and was forced to depend on toilets belonging to others within the community. This created ongoing difficulties related to hygiene, safety, and personal dignity, particularly for the women and children in the household.

Supporting Health, Safety, and Dignity

Recognizing the urgent need for improved sanitation, Vanni Hope carried out the construction of a permanent toilet facility designed to provide the family with a safer and healthier environment. The project focused on reducing sanitation related health risks while ensuring greater comfort, privacy, and security for all family members.

The newly constructed facility included essential structural components such as a reinforced concrete roof, cement flooring, plastered walls, a septic system, and the installation of a quality squatting pan to ensure safe and long term use. The construction was completed using durable and locally appropriate materials to support sustainability and minimal maintenance requirements.

Creating Long Term Impact

Beyond immediate sanitation support, this project also aimed to promote healthier hygiene practices and improve the overall well being of the household. By providing a permanent sanitation solution, the initiative contributes to long term improvements in health, safety, and quality of life for the family.

The family was also encouraged to take ownership of the facility and maintain proper hygiene and cleanliness practices to ensure the sustainability of the project for years to come.
