Strengthening Healthcare Access in Rural Trincomalee

We are proud to announce the successful completion of two Health Support Projects in the Trincomalee District, Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, aimed at improving healthcare delivery and ensuring equitable access to quality medical services for rural communities.

These initiatives focused on providing essential medical equipment and tools to Divisional Hospital, Sampoor, and the Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) at Mutur Base Hospital, both serving as vital healthcare centers for thousands of families across the region.

The Sampoor Hospital Project was generously sponsored by Dr. Malathi Waran (Australia), supporting improved patient care and essential medical equipment for the hospital.
The Mutur Base Hospital ETU Project was kindly sponsored by Mr. Sundaresh Sivaratnam (USA), enhancing emergency care services and strengthening the hospital’s capacity to manage trauma and critical cases.

Enhancing Care at Sampoor Divisional Hospital

Under the Health & Wellbeing Empowerment Project, Vanni Hope supported the Divisional Hospital, Sampoor, with the provision of essential medical equipment to improve patient care, diagnosis accuracy, and treatment efficiency.

This project was generously sponsored by Dr. Malathi Waran (Australia), whose contribution enabled the hospital to receive critical items such as:

  • Pulse Oximeter
  • Oxygen Tank Stand
  • Ear Syringe
  • Elastoplast Rolls (Adhesive Plaster)
  • Examination / Procedure Bed (4 feet)
  • Emergency Torch
  • Cloth-Cutting Scissors
  • Rechargeable Batteries with Charger (for BP Machine)
  • Stethoscope for ETU
  • Water Dispenser for OPD

These resources directly strengthen the hospital’s ability to serve over 2,500 rural residents, ensuring that patients receive safe, timely, and high quality medical attention.

Strengthening Emergency Care at Mutur Base Hospital

In a parallel effort, Vanni Hope implemented a second project under the ETU Strengthening Program, providing critical medical support to the Mutur Base Hospital, a key Type A healthcare facility serving over 80,000 to 90,000 people across the Mutur Division and surrounding areas.

The Mutur ETU Project, kindly sponsored by Mr. Sundaresh Sivaratnam (USA), aimed to enhance emergency care responsiveness and trauma management. Essential equipment provided included:

  • Emergency trolley
  • Stretcher
  • Ophthalmoscope
  • Wheelchairs (2 units)

These items have significantly boosted the hospital’s emergency capacity, enabling quicker response times, better patient stabilization, and reduced delays in referrals and treatment during critical situations.

Building Healthier and Resilient Communities

Both initiatives were designed to strengthen rural healthcare systems by equipping hospitals with modern tools, improving service efficiency, and ensuring that even remote communities can access lifesaving care.

Key outcomes include:

  • Improved patient management and emergency response.
  • Enhanced capacity for trauma and critical care cases.
  • Strengthened referral systems with better patient transfer efficiency.
  • Greater confidence among medical staff to deliver high-quality care.

These outcomes collectively contribute to the long-term health and resilience of the Trincomalee community. The donated equipment enhances emergency care capacity, ensuring quicker response times and improved patient management, while contributing to stronger rural healthcare infrastructure in the Eastern Province.

A Shared Vision for Health and Hope

These projects exemplify Vanni Hope’s ongoing commitment to uplifting rural Sri Lankan communities through initiatives focused on health, wellbeing, education, cultural preservation, and sustainable development.

With heartfelt gratitude, Vanni Hope acknowledges the generosity of Dr. Malathi Waran (Australia) and Mr. Sundaresh Sivaratnam (USA) for their compassionate contributions that made these healthcare improvements possible.

Together, we continue to build a future where every Sri Lankan, regardless of location or background, has access to quality medical care and the dignity of good health.
