Donation of a Portable Ultrasound Scanner and Workshop at Kaluwanchikudy Base Hospital

As part of Vanni Hope’s Health Enhancement Project, we recently donated a portable ultrasound scanner to Kaluwanchikudy Base Hospital in Batticaloa District. In addition to this essential medical equipment, we sponsored a workshop on “Point of Care Ultrasound Scan”, providing hands-on training and valuable insights for medical officers in the region.

Workshop on “Point of Care Ultrasound Scan”

The workshop was held on 11th January 2025 at Kaluwanchikudy Base Hospital and was led by Dr. Ashokan, a Consultant Radiologist from the USA. He was joined by Dr. Krishna Mandaleson (Consultant Physician), Dr. Naj Nagendran (Consultant Emergency Physician), and Mr. Ranjan, Vanni Hope’s Co-ordinator.

Medical officers from several hospitals within the Batticaloa RDHS region and from Kalmunai North Base Hospital participated in this workshop. The sessions provided practical training on ultrasound use at the point of care, empowering doctors to deliver timely and accurate diagnoses for their patients.

Donation of a Portable Ultrasound Scanner

The portable ultrasound scanner donated by Vanni Hope is a critical addition to the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities. This equipment will significantly improve patient care by enabling doctors to perform on-the-spot scans, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for diagnostic services.

Kaluwanchikudy Base Hospital serves a large rural population, and having this scanner available will enhance care for pregnant women, patients with chronic conditions, and emergency cases requiring immediate diagnostic intervention.

This donation is part of Vanni Hope’s ongoing support for the hospital, which has previously included the provision of other medical equipment to enhance patient care services.

Empowering Healthcare Professionals

Workshops like this are essential for empowering local healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to utilise medical equipment effectively. The session focused on practical demonstrations, helping participants to better understand the applications of portable ultrasound technology in emergency care, obstetrics, and general medicine.

We are immensely grateful to Dr. Ashokan, Dr. Krishna, Dr. Naj Nagendran, and Mr. Ranjan for their dedication and time in making this workshop a success. Their voluntary contributions of expertise and experience are invaluable in helping rural hospitals provide quality healthcare services.

Gratitude and Commitment

Vanni Hope extends its sincere thanks to the medical officers who participated in the workshop and to the hospital staff for their continued collaboration. We remain committed to bridging gaps in healthcare services by providing essential medical equipment and training opportunities for healthcare professionals across Sri Lanka.

Together, we are making a tangible impact on the lives of patients and healthcare workers in rural communities.
