This initiative, proudly sponsored by Dr. Malathi Waran, is designed to protect and empower rural schoolchildren in Mutur, Trincomalee, by providing them with the knowledge, confidence, and life skills needed to resist drug use. Through interactive sessions and community engagement, the project will foster resilience among 60 adolescents while supporting teachers and families in guiding students toward healthier, more positive futures.
From Risk to Resilience: Tackling the Drug Challenge
In post-war rural areas like Trincomalee, students often face multiple challenges, including economic hardship, limited educational resources, and growing exposure to harmful societal influences. Among the most pressing concerns is the rising risk of drug use among adolescents, driven by peer pressure and lack of awareness.
This project aims to address these risks by ensuring students receive timely education about the dangers of drugs, while also encouraging communities to take collective responsibility for safeguarding youth wellbeing.
Building Knowledge and Confidence: Awareness Workshop
To meet this challenge, Vanni Hope has launched the Drug-Free Future Awareness Workshop, which includes the following components:
- Interactive Educational Sessions: Experts will engage directly with students to explain the impact of drugs on health, education, and society.
- Life Skills Training: Practical tools to build confidence, decision-making ability, and resilience against peer pressure.
- Teacher Empowerment: Providing staff with resources and methods to continue drug prevention education in schools.
- Community Involvement: Encouraging families and local leaders to participate in fostering a supportive environment.
This initiative goes beyond a one-time event — it is an investment in long-term youth development and community wellbeing.
Empowering Students, Teachers, and Communities
The benefits of this project extend far beyond the 60 students and 10 teachers directly involved. By raising awareness and promoting positive alternatives, the initiative will:
- Equip students with the strength to make safe, informed choices.
- Strengthen schools as centers of prevention and guidance.
- Encourage families and local communities to take shared responsibility for youth wellbeing.
- Lay the foundation for sustained drug prevention efforts in Mutur and across Trincomalee.
Through this effort, the community is empowered to protect its younger generation while promoting a culture of health and responsibility.
Organized by the Iruthayapuram Vaddara Library Society
The Iruthayapuram Vaddara Library Society successfully organized the awareness workshop titled “Drug-Free Future: Awareness Program for a Drug-Free Society” on 23rd August 2025. The event was held at Mallikaitheevu, Mutur, in the Trincomalee District.
Students from three rural schools: Mallikaithivu, Paddiththidal, and Kathiresar participated in this important awareness program. During the workshop, qualified resource persons conducted sessions that engaged students through interactive presentations and open discussions.
Key Highlights of the Workshop
- Students learned about the physical, mental, and social consequences of drug use.
- They were educated on how to avoid peer pressure and make informed choices.
- The sessions emphasized the importance of living a healthy, drug-free life.
These lessons not only provided critical knowledge but also encouraged students to think deeply about the kind of future they want to build for themselves and their communities.
With Gratitude and Commitment
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the participating schools, dedicated teachers, and community partners who make this initiative possible. Their support ensures that rural students not only gain vital knowledge but also feel encouraged to pursue brighter, healthier futures.
This project is made possible through the generous support of the sponsor, Dr. Malathi Waran, whose commitment to education and community health has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.
As Vanni Hope, we remain committed to advancing health, wellbeing, and resilience. The Drug-Free Future Awareness Workshop demonstrates how education and collective responsibility can create lasting positive change in the lives of young people and the communities they call home.
