Sponsored Students Overcome Hardship to Excel in G.C.E. O-Level Examinations

As students across Sri Lanka receive their G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O-Level) results, we are thrilled to celebrate three exceptional students sponsored by Vanni Hope who have achieved outstanding academic success. Their remarkable achievements serve as powerful reminders of what is possible when determination meets opportunity.

Each of these students has faced significant adversity, from grief and poverty to rising living costs and the pressure of being the hope of their families. Yet, with the backing of compassionate sponsors and their unwavering commitment to education, they have emerged with results that reflect not only academic excellence but incredible strength of character.

Pathumithan – BT/Shivananda Vidyalaya, Batticaloa District

Results: 8 A passes and 1 C pass

Pathumithan, from Puthukudiyiruppu in the Batticaloa district, grew up with the odds stacked against him. Following the tragic loss of his father, his mother has worked tirelessly as a daily wage labourer to support the family. The burden of grief, financial hardship, and limited resources could have easily derailed his academic journey.

Instead, Pathumithan channelled his challenges into motivation, achieving 8 A passes and 1 C in his O-Levels. His ability to excel while navigating such personal hardship is inspiring. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Mr. Canius Gnanasooriyar from Australia, he has remained in school, driven by the knowledge that he is not alone, and that his future is worth investing in.

S. Yugeshini – T/Sri Shanmuga Hindu Ladies College, Trincomalee

Results: 6 A passes, 2 B passes, and 1 C pass

Living in Selvanayagapuram, Trincomalee, Yugeshini’s world has been shaped by her responsibilities as the eldest child of a single-parent family. Her mother, doing all she can to raise two children, has struggled to meet daily expenses amidst the increasing cost of living.

Despite the financial strain and emotional pressure of supporting her family, Yugeshini has excelled in her studies, earning 6 A passes, 2 B passes, and 1 C pass. Her academic success is a testament to her resilience and maturity beyond her years. With the kind support of the Gnanendran Foundation (USA), Yugeshini has been able to continue her education without fear of interruption, and with the knowledge that someone believes in her.

S. Karthikeyan – MN/Murungan Central College, Mannar

Results: 5 A passes, 2 B passes, and 2 C passes

From the rural community of Echalawakkai in Mannar, Karthikeyan’s life changed drastically with the death of his father. His mother became the sole breadwinner, working as a daily wage labourer to care for him and his sister. The uncertainty of income, along with the emotional toll of losing a parent, placed enormous pressure on this young student.

Yet Karthikeyan refused to let these struggles define his future. With discipline and persistence, he earned 5 A passes, 2 B passes, and 2 C passes in his O-Levels — a remarkable feat given his circumstances. Supported by Ms. Sanjutha Nath from Australia, Karthikeyan has remained steadfast in his educational goals, knowing that brighter days lie ahead.

Hope Turned Into Action

These are just three of the many students Vanni Hope proudly supports through our Education Support initiatives. We are beyond proud of their efforts and are filled with gratitude for the donors who make this work possible. Each sponsor has helped give these young people not just an education, but also belief in themselves and a chance to transform their futures.

As the results come in for students across Sri Lanka, we are reminded that true success isn’t just measured in grades… it’s measured in resilience, in courage, and in the community that uplifts them.
