Enhancing Maths Education for 878 Students at Al Minara and Meddakanda Schools in Balangoda with Model Classrooms

As part of our Education Support Initiative, Vanni Hope is proud to announce the successful establishment of Model Mathematics Classrooms at two schools in the Balangoda area of Ratnapura District: R/BAL/Al Minara Muslim Vidyalaya and R/BAL/Meddakanda Tamil Vidyalaya. These classrooms were made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Lakshmana Iyer Sasitharan Family from Australia.

Supporting Underserved Communities Through Education

Both schools serve children from plantation and rural families, most of whom rely on low daily wages or subsistence farming. Education is one of the few avenues through which these families can break the cycle of poverty—but without adequate facilities, students struggle to reach their full potential.

• Al Minara Muslim Vidyalaya: With 650 students, this school had a critical need for structured mathematics education and basic classroom resources.

• Meddakanda Tamil Vidyalaya: Home to 228 students, this school also lacked proper maths equipment, a dedicated teaching plan, and had a shortage of mathematics-trained teachers.

Our Contribution

Vanni Hope provided a complete Model Mathematics Classroom setup for both schools, including age-appropriate learning materials and equipment to facilitate interactive and effective maths learning. Name boards were also installed, and operational costs were covered to support implementation.

This support is expected to:

• Improve academic outcomes in mathematics

• Foster interest in STEM among rural students

• Encourage regular attendance

• Lay the foundation for future careers in fields such as engineering and education

Creating Sustainable Educational Opportunities

Thanks to the Lakshmana Iyer Sasitharan Family, 878 students now have access to better learning environments, giving them a real opportunity to thrive academically. These improvements go beyond physical infrastructure—they represent our belief in equity, opportunity, and transformation through education.
