Vanni Hope is proud to announce the successful completion of a Model Mathematics Classroom at J/Idaikkurichchi Sri Subramaniya Vidyalayam, located in the village of Varany in the Jaffna District. This project, sponsored by Vanitha Srilakshmi Thayaparan from Australia and implemented under our Education Support Initiative, is a significant step toward improving access to quality STEM education in underserved communities.
Addressing Barriers to Learning
With only 74 students enrolled and situated in one of the most underserved areas of the Northern Province, this school faced significant barriers to effective mathematics education. Many students come from families relying on daily wage labour or farming, and the lack of basic educational resources—particularly for maths—was holding them back.
The area has also struggled with a shortage of trained maths teachers and lacked a dedicated space or tools for learning. Recognising this, Vanni Hope intervened with a targeted support plan to provide mathematical learning equipment and create a structured environment for students to thrive.
Project Highlights
This classroom is more than just a room—it’s a resource-packed learning hub designed to:
- Improve maths learning outcomes and exam performance
- Encourage interest in STEM careers such as engineering and technology
- Build confidence and attendance through an engaging educational space
- Lay the foundation for future tech-savvy professionals from rural backgrounds
Direct and Indirect Impact
- Direct Beneficiaries: 74 students who actively use the Model Mathematics Classroom.
- Indirect Beneficiaries: 280 Students from other year levels across the school, who will benefit as the teaching methods and learning resources introduced in the model classroom begin to influence school-wide instruction and performance.
Our Vision Forward
At Vanni Hope, we firmly believe that education is the key to breaking cycles of disadvantage, especially in rural Sri Lanka. Projects like these don’t just offer equipment—they offer opportunities. With every child who walks into this model classroom, a new pathway opens for their future.
Gratitude
We express our sincere thanks to Vanitha Srilakshmi Thayaparan for her generous support and trust in our mission. Her contribution is changing lives where it’s needed most.
