Bringing Smart Learning to Rural Kandy: A Digital Leap for CP/W. Knuckles Tamil Vidyalayam

Vanni Hope is proud to announce the successful completion of a Digital Education Empowerment Project at CP/W. Knuckles Tamil Vidyalayam, Thawalanthenna, located in the rural Panvila Division of the Wattegama Educational Zone in Kandy District. Serving 395 students from Grades 1 to 11, this school represents one of the most underserved communities in the Central Province, where many families face economic hardship, limited digital access, and barriers to quality learning. This project marks an essential step in bridging the technological divide and uplifting the educational environment for children in plantation-based rural communities.

Introducing a Fully Equipped Smart Classroom

Before the project, students relied almost entirely on traditional, low-resource classrooms with no access to digital equipment or Smart Learning tools. Recognizing the need for modern infrastructure, Vanni Hope implemented a full Smart Classroom installation, including:

  • A Smart Board (All-in-One Interactive Panel) for visual, collaborative, and multimedia teaching
  • Wi-Fi connectivity to enable internet-based lessons and digital content access
  • A new name board to highlight the Smart Classroom facility
  • Teacher training workshops for effective Smart Board usage
  • A UPS system to ensure uninterrupted power supply and equipment safety
  • Operational support through Vanni Hope’s implementation and monitoring team

These upgrades have transformed a previously basic classroom into a Smart Learning environment, enabling teachers to deliver lessons using videos, interactive presentations, virtual tools, and structured digital exercises. The Smart Board now serves as the school’s central hub for student-centered learning.

Empowering Rural Students with Digital Skills

Children in the Panvila Division face significant socio economic challenges, many families work in plantation labor or daily wage jobs, limiting their ability to support digital learning at home. This project directly addresses these inequalities by providing:

  • Access to high quality digital learning tools
  • A modern educational environment matching urban schools
  • Improved digital literacy for students from primary through upper grades
  • Enhanced motivation, curiosity, and classroom engagement
  • Increased school attendance and learning outcomes

The Smart Classroom also contributes to long term educational development, supporting the creation of a technologically skilled, globally competitive student community, one of the project’s core goals.

Teacher Empowerment & Sustainable Learning

To ensure sustainability, the project included structured teacher training, equipping staff with the skills needed to:

  • Operate the Smart Board
  • Integrate digital tools into daily lessons
  • Adapt teaching methods for interactive learning
  • Maintain the equipment in collaboration with the Zonal Education Office

This capacity building approach creates a self sustaining model where educators can continue expanding digital learning independently. The school management committee will support the upkeep, ensuring long-term continuity and maximizing student benefit.

A Project Made Possible Through Generosity

This transformative Smart Classroom initiative was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Dr. Sabaratnam Somasundaram and Prof. Sabaratnam Prathaban from Australia & SDS.

Their commitment enabled:

  • Complete Smart Board installation
  • Teacher training programs
  • Wi-Fi and digital infrastructure
  • Operational and implementation support

Their contribution has given 395 rural students access to high-quality, digital education, an opportunity that will shape their future learning and aspirations.

Vanni Hope extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Somasundaram and Prof. Prathaban for helping uplift an underserved school and empowering an entire community through education.
