Transforming Mathematics Learning for 66 Students at J Pookkaddy GTM School

The grand opening of a newly established Mathematics Classroom was successfully held at J Pookkaddy GTM School in Jaffna. This initiative marked an important step in strengthening mathematics education by providing students with improved access to learning resources and a dedicated classroom environment.

The project directly supported 66 students, while also creating a wider positive impact on approximately 180 individuals, including teachers, families, and the surrounding school community.

Improving Access to Mathematics Learning Resources

This initiative focused on enhancing the quality of mathematics education through the provision of mathematical equipment and classroom learning resources. These tools supported more structured and engaging lessons, helping students better understand key mathematical concepts.

The introduction of these resources addressed existing gaps in the learning environment, allowing students to move beyond traditional teaching methods and engage more actively in their studies.

Creating an Engaging and Interactive Learning Environment

The newly established Mathematics Classroom provided a dedicated space where students learned in a more focused and supportive setting. With access to appropriate learning tools, students participated more actively in lessons and developed stronger problem solving and critical thinking skills.

A key highlight of the opening event was a student led interactive session, where students confidently demonstrated how the new tools were used in their daily learning. Their presentations reflected creativity, enthusiasm, and a clear understanding of mathematical concepts.

The event was honoured by the presence of distinguished guests and well wishers of Vanni Hope, including Mr Muralitharan, Country Director of Vanni Hope, Mr Rathesa Rasaratnam from Australia, Mr Sutharsan, Deputy Director of the Thenmaradchi Zonal Education Office, Miss Saranya Selvarasa, and Mr Sanjainath. Their presence added value to the occasion and provided encouragement to both students and staff.

This experience also helped build students’ confidence, communication abilities, and leadership skills, making the event both educational and inspiring.

Supporting Long Term Academic Development

The Mathematics Classroom contributed to improved conceptual understanding and encouraged a deeper interest in mathematics among students. By strengthening foundational skills, the initiative supported better academic performance and created opportunities for continued educational growth.

The improved learning environment also supported teachers in delivering more effective and engaging lessons, benefiting the entire school community.

Acknowledgement

This meaningful initiative was generously funded by the Amalan Family from Australia, whose support made the establishment of the Mathematics Classroom possible. Their commitment to improving educational opportunities created a lasting impact on the students of J Pookkaddy GTM School.

Vanni Hope extended its sincere appreciation to the sponsors, school staff, and all those involved in the successful implementation of this project.
