Strengthening Mathematics Education at Vidathapalai Kamalasani Vidyalayam with New Learning Tools

Vanni Hope has successfully completed another impactful model mathematics classroom—this time at J/Vidathapalai Kamalasani Vidyalayam in Chavakachcheri, Jaffna District. This project was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Dr. Paramaswamy Paramsothy (Australia), who has helped equip a vulnerable school with the tools to improve mathematics learning outcomes for students in this under-resourced community.

Addressing a Critical Gap in Rural Education

With just 71 students, J/Vidathapalai Kamalasani Vidyalayam serves a Tamil-majority community of daily wage workers and farming families. Despite the students’ potential, the school has long faced challenges, including:

  • Lack of a model classroom for teaching mathematics
  • Shortage of trained maths teachers
  • Absence of curriculum development plans and supporting infrastructure

These issues have led to low academic performance in mathematics and limited opportunities for students to pursue higher education or technical fields.

Project Outcomes and Impact

Through this initiative, we provided essential mathematical teaching equipment tailored to support effective and engaging lessons. The project is already having a noticeable impact:

  • 71 students are directly benefiting from the improved learning environment
  • An additional 150 students across other levels will benefit indirectly
  • The initiative is expected to raise exam results, attendance rates, and student engagement
  • It also paves the way for careers in technology, engineering, and other fields for youth in the community

This project marks a crucial step in empowering a marginalised rural community to access quality education and brighter futures.

Looking Ahead

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Paramaswamy Paramsothy for his commitment to education equity. This classroom is more than just a space—it’s an investment in a generation of students who deserve the opportunity to thrive.

At Vanni Hope, we believe in making lasting change by tackling the root causes of educational disadvantage. By investing in classroom infrastructure and learning resources, we’re helping children from rural Sri Lanka dream bigger and reach further.
